I live in Birmingham (UK) and want to know how people get chosen to take part in Market research panels and get paid for taking part, I hear about people doing it…but it’s harder to find out how to get involved

I’ve participated through two different channels. One arose out of picking names in different localities from, I think, the electoral roll, and, if you fitted into the set criteria, you agreed in writing to participate (this was a leading market research agency and it was all above board. No payment, but it gave you a chance to vent your feelings.

The other way is to walk through certain areas when about your daily business (high streets) where market researchers hover with their clip boards. They know which sector of the population they are targeting and some days you will be too old and other days too young, etc.

The Common Cold Institute used to offer free holidays to people prepared to suffer from the sniffles in the process, but I think that’s over and done with. I used to be on the Tesco Consumer Research panel at my local branch for a magnificent period until they moved over to another branch.
